A perfect picture to find as this is my front row!
I’ve finished Etrian Odyssey IV some time ago. It was a fantastic game and I have nothing but love for it. I’ve started the postgame maze and it is challenging.
I used a very vanilla party composition (support, tank, dps, elemental, healer). I wanted to try the other classes out but this just worked out really well for me. Here’s the team I’ve used from start to finish:
Front:
Landsknecht/Runemaster: Maxed links and increased elemental damage. Little to “okay” mana pool.
Fortress/Landsknecht: Party Guard. Small TP pool, but recovers quickly from class passive.
Back:
Sniper/Imperial: Just straight power with Squall Volley. Requires Target Goggles equipped because squall volley’s poor accuracy. Very little TP pool. Out of battle, you use it for Camouflage. Regular battles, it just auto-attacks.
Medic/Runemaster: Party Heal, Full Heal and the automatic-heal/revive. On the Runemaster side, all the passives along with Rune buffs. Big TP pool.
Runemaster/Imperial: Straight up elemental damage. Too much TP for it’s own good! It is your consistent damage dealer.
I would rather have my Sniper as a Nightseeker sub for the accuracy passive, but I don’t want my Sniper going first. It must always go after the Landsknecht in order to take advantage of the links. So use gear to speed up your L and to slow down your S. Whenever my Landsknect is consistently faster, I’ll switch the sub on my Sniper.
First turn:
(L) Improved Link, (F) Rampart or Party Guard, (S) Lock on or Spotter, (M) Rune Buff, (R) Runic Gleam
The medic buffs your party and debuffs the enemies resistances. This makes your element damage in the next turn very effective. Ie. Medic does Fire Rune, so the next turn the Landsknecht does Blazing Link + Runemaster does Fireball.
Second Turn:
(L) Blazing/Freezing/Electric Link, (F) Party Guard forever, (S) Squall Volley, (M) Party Heal or Full Heal on Fortress, (R) Whatever kickass rune spell you have.
There is a bit of RNG in this build, but once it works, it is amazing haha. The Landsknecht and Sniper synergize well together. Each hit of squall volley can a trigger a link! It racks up damage very quickly. Then after all the links, your Runemaster goes and blasts the hell out of the enemies.
This build is amazing against 1 enemy. So it works well against FOEs and bosses. And it’s absolutely terrible if you are facing a mob as the squall volley shots spread out. Usually, it will be up to your Runemaster to kill groups since he/she has so much mana.
Now, it’s time for me to try out the other classes as I play through post-game. I really like the Bushi, so I’m going to give that a try.
